Red envelope-exchange with digital wallet
Over centuries people in China were sending "red envelopes" stuffed with cash to families and friends as Chinese New Year gift. But as China tends to be a cashless society now alternatives have to be set up.
WeChat, the most popular "Swiss knife" for calling, messaging and payments, extended its dominance in new year communication, as well as red envelope-exchange with its digital wallet. This year, the app launched its "Holiday Red Envelope", allowing users to add well wishes and stickers to a money gift in a customized gift package.
According to WeChat people born in the 1990s led the red envelope gift by the app at Chinese New Year's Eve. The top three cities using it were Beijing, Chongqing and Guangzhou. The popular timeframe was the four hour-long Spring Festival Gala, a must-see TV show for most Chinese families over their reunion dinner.
